Day 2 #Lucky Fabb…

Day 2 of the Lucky Fabb Conference was filled with break out sessions, seasoned professionals, and my favorite fashionista BARBIE!

The Founders’ Series: How I made it!

First up was Jess Lee Co- founder & CEO from Polyvore. Jess talked about how she became so addicted to creating Polyvore sets that she decided to leave her job at Google to join Polyvore’s team. That was 6 years ago and since that time she has help build a larger community on Polyvore. Before our session with Jess was over, she was asked to share 3 keys to Success.

1. Tenacity- It was a word I heard over and over again at the conference. Jess like many of the other speakers emphasized how persistence and deterimination can and will pay off.

2. Learning- Always continue learning she said, if your not learning you are not challenging yourself. Technology is always changing and it’s our job to stay current. So true!

3. Pay it Forward- This was probably the single most used refrence from my trip to NYC. The concept of mentoring, sharing, and helping each other achieve personal success. While I personally subscibe to this way of thinking, I must say that I was very suprised and delighted to hear that fashions new “heavy hitters” are also on board. It’s a MAJOR step forward and shift in thinking for the Fashion Industry. Amen to that!!

Next we heard from Tamara Mellon, Entrepreneur and former Chief Creative officer and Co-founder of Jimmy Choo. Tamara, who is absolutely stunning, was wearing the most fabulous all-in-one leather boot leggings from her new collection. Tamara recently started her own collection of seasonless items for the modern woman. Based on her experience as a female consumer, Tamara recognizes, that women want to the ability to buy now and wear now. They don’t want to shop for their spring wardrobe in November almost 4 mos ahead of the season. Especially women that live in fluctuating climates. Many industry experts and designers agree the retailers launch seasonal collections too early. As soon as the collections hit the runway, more than half the population gets a glimpse on instagram, facebook, and twitter. Gone are the days when the first images of a designers new collection was in WWD. However, in fairness to the retail buyers, they have to keep up with the other stores, and ecommerce sites. This has conditioned shoppers to preview a collection once it hits the store and then wait a few weeks for those items to go on sale. Which hurts everyones business.

The Tamara Mellon Collection will be offering monthly capsule collections that are available for immediate wear. I for one am very excited. Who knows maybe other brands will get on board with this simple yet genius concept.

Then it was off to lunch with my favorite childhood friend, and #1 fashionista of all time…BARBIE!!

It was definitely going to be the most fun I’d ever had at a business conference lunch. When l walked into the luncheon room it felt like I had landed on the planet of Barbie, where everyone was 7 years old and PINK was considered a neutral color. (Of course, I already consider it a neutral) but popular opinion has you believe it’s an accent color.

After lunch we were back for the second half of the Founders’ Series: How I Made It

I can’t think of a better blogger to kick-off the second half of the day, but the Man Repeller herself, Leandra Medine. She shared her zaney stories, rise to fame, followers, and use of my favorite 4 letter (cuss) word. Leandra is tiny woman with a strong point of view and quick wit. She talked about the blogs she reads and the authors that inspire her. She told us that when she was writing her book  she purposely didn’t read an blogs, with the exception of browsing a few street blogs. Her advice was to stay true to your voice, read books, get inspired by your favorite authors, and don’t quit your day job.

Finishing up the founders series was a session on planning an editorial calendar with Elana Fishman Senior Digital Editor at Luckymag.com and Jordan Reid from Ramshakleglam.

Both ladies talked about the importance of planning your editorial calendar. Each one guided us through their step by step planning process and how it varies for each format. Elaina gave examples of the differing structure between the online and print publication. Jordan had great incite and step by step content generating templates and tips. She recommended having back articles and posts, as well choosing one day a week to shoot bulk photos and videos. Simple ideas that help save time and allievate stress. Both women were a so personalble and truly a wealth of knowledge.

Last but not least we got an on-camera ready make-up tutorial from Jake Bailey. Jake Bailey is a celebritiy make-up artist and photographer. His tutorial was extremely helpful and  in-depth. Jake used a variety of P&G Beauty products from the moisturizing prior to application and the use of BB creams. Some of his favorite products included Olay Satin Finish moisturizer, Covergirl outlast 3 -in-1 foundation Covergirl inkit gel liner, and their new Flamed out waterproof mascara. Jake works with many celebrities including Sarah Jessica ParkerKyra Sedgwick, and Nina Dobrev. Jake is a seasoned pro and was originally trained by the late great Kevin Aucoin. He’s also an amazing photographer, and applies his make-up techniques accordingly.

Big thanks to everyone at Lucky Magazine and P&G Beauty…see you at the next one!

xo,

BDG
