Guy Style…

A few months ago, I styled a photo shoot for Berks County Living Magazine featuring four of Berks County’s most stylish men. Each one of the men featured in the article, were styled in different looks, which included casual, suit& tie, preppy, and hipster.

Group shoot of the stylish men…

In preparation for the shoot, I met with each of the men individually to get a feel for each man’s own personal style. Each of the men knew what they did and did not like to wear, which was extremely helpful for styling the assignment.

The first gentleman I styled was Mark Ratcliffe. Mark has impeccable taste in clothing. He’s not what some might consider a “casual guy,” in the traditional sense, but Mark pulls it off. We both wanted a refined, well-dressed casual look as opposed to the obvious relaxed jeans and beat up t-shirt ensemble. So we headed in town to the headquarters of Bills Khakis, local menswear label that knows a thing or FIVE, about well made menswear. Our visit was a complete success. The company VP of Marketing and Sales, Mary Jo, was kind enough to show us the Spring 2014 Collection and allowed me to pull pieces for the shoot. Talk about service…is it any wonder they have thrived for 24 years? Nope, it is clear to see why the brand has a loyal following.

Next I styled Justin Colon for the Suit & Tie look. Justin has a collection of tailored off- the-rack suits. As a professional Justin job requires him to attend professional events that call for a suit & tie. Justin wears a lightweight wool blend suit in charcoal gray. I styled Justin in a classic suit made in a seasonless fabric. A well made suit can be quite and investment, so it’s best to buy one that can transition from season to season. I paired the suit with a crisp white dress shirt and pocket square from Mens Warehouse. And finished off Justin’s look with a pale yellow and grey tie by Calvin Klein from TJ Maxx.

Daniel Heifer is the epitome of the hipster guy. Dan’s personality is humble & down to earth, and he considers his personal style nothing special. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The truth is Dan has a real sense of style and a knack for selecting quality pieces that he pairs with stylish shirts, skinny ties, clean T-shirts, and great shoes. Not unlike the other men I worked with on this project, Dan also knows what he likes and does not like to wear. Especially the kinds of denim he prefers to wear, from the weight of the denim to the wash. He prefers a heavier denim in a slim cut and dark wash. For Dans look I pulled a slim fit military button down from Old Navy, and layered it over a basic cotton tee. I paired it with Dan’s favorite Levi Jeans, his light weight grey vest, and a wide striped tie. Completing his look, I added the edgy Kingpin Chemist Pork Pie hat courtesy of local manufacture and brand hats.com.

My final meeting and fitting was with watchmaker Tadd Casner. When I met with Tad, he was in the middle of moving into his new home. I was immediately introduced and greeted by his friends and family, who were helping to get him settled into his new digs. The publisher of the magazine had mentioned that, in addition to Tadd’s amazing style, he had a vast collection of new and vintage bow-ties. Well, that was only the beginning of the unique and exquisite collection of vintage clothing and accessories Tad had acquired over the years. He has a passion for collecting well made tailored clothes from times past, and, I could not help but feeling like I was in the wardrobe scene from the Great Gatsby.

I couldn’t have asked for more interesting and stylish men to style & interview for me first published article in Berks County Living Magazine.
