Saturday, June 21 was the first official day of summer, the “Summer Solstice” is the longest day of the year. Saturday we enjoyed 15 hours of daylight in our area alone. It was fantastic!
When I was a kid, there was nothing I loved more than the summertime. It meant having a break from school and being able to go to the shore with my family and friends. As an adult, I still love the gorgeous weather and longer days, but I prefer cooler balmy temperatures. Everyone knows the dangers associated with the summer sun, so it’s important to stay protected and hydrated during this time.
As a fair haired ginger from birth, I know all too well what happens after a day in the sun without proper protection. Now that I’m older, I’m very proactive when I’m heading outdoors for the day. I wear lots of sunblock, UV/ polarized sunglasses, and hats or visors to protect my face. Those of you that are close friends know that I wasn’t always so smart. In my teens, I thought SPF4 was sufficient for my delicate skin because I wanted to be as dark and tan as my olive skin tone friends. Then, in my early 20’s, my idea of sun protection was to indoor tan. I convinced myself that it was safer to lay in a tanning bed and that I just needed SPF when I was outdoors at the beach or pool. NOT TRUE, as I found out the hard way. Now I am trying to reverse the effects of the sun on my skin. But it’s not just being at the beach that can cause skin damage. In fact, most my facial sun damaged happened when I was 13 in Colorado on a skiing trip with my family. The higher elevations and the sun’s rays reflecting off the snow are the reasons I have one too many freckles. It’s a familiar story for many, and one that we all have probably encountered at one time or another not matter what skin type you have.
So how can you be sun smart and still feel stylish? I put together a few of my favorite items to help you stay safe while look cool!
Enjoy the summer sun!
