The Swedish watch brand that was inspired by a Brit….

I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting designers and fashion brands. A few months ago, during an event for #NYFW, I was introduced to the Swedish watch brand Daniel Wellington. Being the accessory “junkie” that I am, I had to get a closer look at the gorgeous timepieces and colorful straps. As it turns out, the brand was anything but new.

Owner and founder Filipe Tystander started the watch brand after a chance encounter with a fellow traveler while backpacking through Austraila in 2006. After a few encounters along the course, Tystander was inspired to design a watch which would incorporate a minimalist aesthetic with vintage details, reminiscent of the one worn by a fellow traveler named Daniel Wellington. The British-born traveler Daniel Wellington wore a Rolex diving watch secured with an old striped nylon NATO strap. The combination was incredibly chic, the kind of look that is worthy of the “early” 007 Bond movies.

There are ten different NATO straps to choose from depending on the size and style of the watch. Additionally, the brand also offers eight leather straps based on style and size that come in four colors and two different leather finishes. There is no shortage of options when purchasing a Daniel Wellington timepiece.

The brands popularity has grown since it’s inception and has a large social media following of bloggers and trend influencers. Getting the product into the hands, or rather on the wrists of these groups, was a strategic move by CEO, Filip Tystander, and his marketing and development team.

I was lucky enough to get one of these beauties on my wrist, and I was thrilled with the quality and classic styling of the timepiece. After years of wearing large masculine steel link watches; I’ve made the jump to a new style. I wear the NATO strap for spring and summer months, and the leather strap for all other occasions and seasons. Below are a few images of my gorgeous Classic Sheffield with the Warwick (NATO) band.
